Political parties have corrupted American values…

Republicans have corrupted what it means to be conservative and libertarian.

Democrats have corrupted what it means to be liberal and progressive.

Centrists have corrupted what it means to be moderate and independent.

Nationalists have corrupted what it means to be patriotic and American.

…and have turned Americans against each other…

Political parties have hijacked our conversations and have turned friends, families and communities against each other.

…but we can declare independence again…

This calls for a new kind of political approach.

What does this mean? It means moving beyond politics as a team sport between tribes at war

How do we do this? By using political views as toolkits, rather than belonging to political views as belief systems.

…and become more perfect than our past.

We call this approach political nonattachment — and it is composed of three principles:

  • Be curious and humble.

  • Be respectful and patient.

  • Be resilient and creative.

It means not having blind faith in a party or philosophy, and not having blind loyalty to a trusted leader. It means thinking deeply about each individual issue without attaching your opinion to a party, ideology, or group of people that “think like you”. It means thinking for yourself.

It is the renewal of the American spirit — self-reliance and political independence.

“The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. It is justly so, for it is a main pillar in the edifice of your real independence, the support of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity; of that very liberty which you so highly prize. But as it is easy to foresee that, from different causes and from different quarters, much pains will be taken, many artifices employed to weaken in your minds the conviction of this truth… you should properly estimate the immense value of your national union to your collective and individual happiness… The name of American… must always exalt the just pride of patriotism... You have in a common cause fought and triumphed together; the independence and liberty you possess are the work of joint counsels, and joint efforts of common dangers, sufferings, and successes.”
